2.Program features

The discipline of “logistics and supply chain management” in Tianjin University was a new one established in 2003 with the combination of theory and practice innovation for modern logistics and supply chain management on base of management science and engineering, industrial engineering and operation management. Engineering master of logistics engineering is one of the first batch professional master programs approved by the state to be established in 2004, and it began to admit full-time engineering master (double certificates) in 2009.

The engineering master of logistics engineering in Tianjin University became one of the first batch programs mutually recognized by the 3rd level career certificate of CILT (8 universities and colleges got mutual approval from it) in 2005. The discipline of logistics engineering in Tianjin University sets related teaching contents according to logistics and supply chain management of processing-manufacturing enterprises and professional logistics service suppliers responding to modern logistics and supply chain management.

In 2012, College of Management and Economics in Tianjin University established the GSCM Dual Degree Program with College of Management in Purdue University, which is designed cultivate talents for supply chain management practice of international enterprises and talents with global perspectives and full understanding of academic research for international leading universities and colleges. In 2013, the Purdue University - Tianjin University GSCM Dual Degree Program began to launch, and 5 students who had successfully applied for it went to study in America.

This discipline has always focused on the cooperation with enterprises, and established stable cooperation relation with DELL (China), John Diehl (China) and other international enterprises in supply chain management fields. In 2012, College of Management and Economics in Tianjin University established the “DELL Supply Chain Management Institute” to face supply chain management theory and practical innovation as well as provide quality consultation service with DELL (China) and College of Management in Shanghai Jiaotong University.

According to features of cultivating senior management talents to solve practical problems, it has integrated management, economics, operation research, production operation management, logistics engineering, supply chain management and other basic theory and professional courses as for teaching system design, helped students master solid basic theory and full professional knowledge, and emphasized students’ ability to find problems in logistics and supply chain management practice, and to analyze and solve the practical problems in logistics and supply chain management with engineering and quantitive scientific tools.

This discipline has many nationally famous experts of logistics and supply chain management, and among them, many teachers have worked and studied in internationally famous universities, and held the position of executive directors or vice group leaders in national logistics societies and teaching coordination groups of engineering master logistics engineering field. It has not only first-rated scientific research team, but also cooperated with Department of Industrial and Systematical Engineering in Georgia Institute of Technology, Manufacturing Institute in University of Cambridge, School of Business in Cranfield University, College of Management of Purdue University and other internationally famous universities and colleges.

3.Major scientific research programs and achievements

This discipline has shouldered many national scientific research programs including 6 National Natural Science Foundation and other provincial scientific research programs. At the same time, it has shouldered and finished many consultation research programs from enterprises and regional governments and provided important scientific basis and effective technical means responding to management practice and regional economic development of enterprises. In recent five years, this discipline has obtained many scientific research achievements; it publishes nearly 100 high-level papers, about 10 academic monographs and textbooks, which have acquired important academic influence.

4.The enrollment in recent years

The discipline began to admit students in 2004, and the students are mainly staffs with certain practical experiment after graduation. Since 2009, it began to admit full-time masters (dual degrees) of logistics engineering. The quality of students admitted by Tianjin University is very high in China.

5.Major master courses and dissertation requirements

The major courses for masters: operation research, applied statistics, modern management, management economics, logistics engineering, supply chain management, operation management, logistics information system, purchase and supply management, logistics service operation management, logistics system modeling and simulation and others.

Students should lay solid foundation, use management science theory, qualitative and quantitive system analysis means and engineering technical means to solve practical problems of logistics and supply chain management by learning during master process.

As for dissertation, students should follow extensively the new trend of international and national fields, and use management science theory and tools to solve practical problems in logistics and supply chain management; the selection of dissertation should be from production practice or have engineering background or applicable value. The dissertation shall be rigid theoretical analysis, detail practical data, full experiment/demonstration computation, precise reasoning and strong systematicness; the writing of the dissertation should be of distinctive nuance, sound logic, and fluent style, and conform to technical writing standard.

6.Employment

The engineering master could engage in logistics system planning, logistics operation management, supply chain management, production operation management, purchasing and supply management, service innovation, supply chain finance management and relative business consultation in kinds of processing and manufacturing enterprises, logistics enterprises, manufacturing service enterprises, consultation institutes, banks, or governmental organs.
