2. Program features

The discipline of system engineering in Tianjin University, started in 1978, was one of the earliest entities to launch teaching and scientific research of system engineering in China, one of the first batch key disciplines in China, and one of authorization entities of master and doctor in China. The program of system engineering makes the kinds of systems as its research objects, and cultivates the senior technology and management talents who control comprehensive aspects, combine the softwares and hardwares, focus on practical application and emphasize the integration.

The program of system engineering is based on Institute of System Engineering in Tianjin University founded in 1978, which is one of the five institutes approved by Ministry of Education to launch the teaching and scientific research of system engineering in China, and one of the earliest entities to start research in system engineering in China. Professor Bao Liu, the founder and the first director of the institute, is the expert of automatical control and system engineering in China. The institute now has 9 professors, 6 associate professors, 1 winner of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 6 new-century” outstanding talents of Ministry of Education.

Since its birth, the discipline of system engineering in Tianjin University puts its emphasis on each kind of social economic system and engineering technical system, makes deep research in control system, information system, system simulation, system optimization, theory of large scale system, prediction and decision, evaluation method and others, and gets many remarkable scientific research achievements in macro economy, energy, environment, education, technology, finance, traffic, enterprise management and other fields. For more than three decades, it has still maintained high research level and academic reputation, established a complete system of research system, and covered three major aspects including theory research of system engineering, research of system engineering method and management application of system engineering. This discipline has emphasis on exploration of new frontier research fields, social economic system and engineering technical system. It is to cultivate comprehensive talents who have higher theoretical abilities, master many technical means and tool, and possess strong actual working ability. Thus, the discipline has its own feature in China’s peers.

3.Major scientific research programs and achievement in recent years

All the tutors of the program have worked as the first leader to preside or complete the research of National Natural Science Foundation. Until now, they have shouldered and completed more than 100 national and provincial scientific research programs, including National Natural Science Foundation, doctor program foundation by Ministry of Education, provincial science and technology program and natural science foundation. In recent years, it has actively launched the scientific development and cooperation and shouldered many entrusted scientific development programs; many programs have been applied in governmental organs, financial institutions and their management departments, kinds of commercial enterprises, non-profit institutions, which bring many social and economic benefits. At present, it has more than 10 the programs under scientific research including modern traffic technology programs of National High Technology Research and Development Program 863, National Natural Science Foundation programs, National Social Science Foundation; the expenditure of programs under scientific research is more than RMB 3 million, and nearly RMB 1 million is finished each year. The discipline has sound scientific research prospect and enough expenditure of scientific research. The tutors of the discipline have published more than 600 papers in internationally and nationally important journals, and nearly 100 papers are selected by SCI, EI and other international retrieval systems.

4. The enrollment in recent years

The discipline of system engineering is the only master program to authorize engineering degree in College of Management and Economics. The application students are mainly from programs of automation, management, mathematics, computer, electro communication, mechanics, chemical engineering and other related undergraduate programs. The basic courses of admission examinations are fundamental courses of the program. According to the development plan, the admission scale will be larger and larger. Most tutors of the program also admit masters of science management and engineering.

5.Major courses for masters and dissertation requirements

Major professional courses for masters: applied functional analysis, system engineering mathematical method, modern control theory, operation research, system identification, self-adaptation control, traffic system engineering, fuzzy programming and application, complex system theory and method, neural network principle and model, traffic control and intelligent traffic system, uncertainty system, intelligent computation method and others

The program is to cultivate senior engineering technology and management talents who should have solid system engineering foundation, master computer technology, engage in system planning, overall plan design and study, system control and management, management and decision analysis, design and development of computer application system and other work. The master dissertation should face economic construction, society, economic development, make kinds of systems as background, make research responding to system control and management problems, focus on combination of theory with practice and qualitative analysis and quantitive method, establish system modeling, analyze the nature of objects, design and optimize the plans of solution.

6. Employment

After graduation, students could engage in technical development and consultation work in governmental organs, administrative and public management departments, kinds of financial institutes and their supervision departments, management departments of urban construction, enterprises and public institutions, and they could also study doctor courses in universities and colleges, as well as scientific research institutes.
