On November 7th, the second meeting of the third International Advisory Board of Management and Economics was held as scheduled at Tianjin University (hereafter called TJU). Jin Dong-han, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (hereafter called CAE) and president of TJU, served as the rotating chairman of the meeting. The members attending the meeting were Cheng Chang-qing, chairman of Societe Generale (China) Limited, LEE Tian-Shyug, distinguished professor of Fu Jen Catholic University, Member of the University Council (vice principal level), Liu Hui, chairman of the strategic advisory committee of Tsinghua Unigroup and Founder and CEO of KMC, James O'Neill, managing director and and COO of JFP Holdings, James M. Tien, academician of National Academy of Engineering (US), dean emeritus of the College of Engineering, University of Miami, Wang Jian-zhou, Former Chairman of China Mobile Ltd., Senior Advisor of GSMA , Zeng Xue-ming, Co-founder of Huacheng R&D Consulting & Huacheng Venture Capital Co., Ltd., Co-founder of Lingsheng Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (sorted alphabetically by surname). Jin Dong-han, academician of CAE and president of TJU, Party secretary Mao Zhao-fang, dean Du Hui-bin, vice dean Yang Bao-chen, Xiong Xiong, Feng Nan, Jia Ning, Liu Jing, deputy Party secretary Yuan Ting, Liu Yu, dean assistant Liu Da-yong of the College of Management & Economics (hereafter called CoME) of TJU attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Jin Donghan.
Jin Dong-han expressed a warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to the members of the advisory board for their arrival in his speech. He mentioned that Tianjin University was founded in 1895 and has always adhered to the mission of "building a strong country through education" for 128 years, fully serving the major development needs of the country and leading the construction of "new engineering". Tianjin University was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish the School of Management in 1984, which is one of the earliest universities in China to establish a school of Management, and the disciplines of Management Science and Engineering have been selected as the national "Double-First Class" construction disciplines. Jin Dong-han stated that the advisory board members have provided valuable advice and practical support for the development of the Management and Economics discipline at TJU, laying a solid foundation for the development of the college. The college has made substantial progress in student cultivation, academic research, faculty development, and other aspects.
Subsequently, the closed-door meeting was held. Du Hui-bin presented a work report for the year 2022-2023 to the advisory board members on student cultivation, honors and awards, faculty development, discipline construction, academic research, and social services. She also introduced the future vision and priorities of the college in terms of internationalization strategy, talent cultivation and introduction.
The advisory board members fully affirmed the past work and achievements of the college, and put forward constructive suggestions for the future development of the college. In terms of student cultivation, emphasis should be placed on the cultivation of innovation and practice among undergraduate and graduate students, in order to enhance their comprehensive strength and competitiveness; in terms of academic research, return to the essence of management problems and explore the use of systems engineering and decision-making science to solve complex practical problems; in terms of faculty development, not only attract high-level talents, but also enhance the stickiness of the existing faculty; in terms of university-enterprise cooperation, promote the integration of industry, academia and research, draw on the innovation of leading enterprises in management, and carry out management research that is truly beneficial to contemporary Chinese enterprises, such as ESG, digital transformation, technology transfer, etc; in terms of internationalization strategy, it is necessary to attract international students, strengthen the introduction of international faculty, and enhance the international competitiveness and influence of the brand.
Jin Dong-han mentioned in the summary of the meeting that he sincerely thanks the advisory board members for providing important strategic guidance for the development of the Management and Economics discipline at TJU. He looks forward to the advisory board members' continuous care and support for CoME. Faculty, staff and students in CoME should unite their hearts, fully absorb opinions, actively promote implementation, and ensure that the advisory board's work has a voice, a role, and a contribution. The university will fully support the development of various undertakings of CoME. He believes that with the joint efforts of everyone, the discipline of management and economics will continue to develop healthily, providing strong talent support for the country and society.
After the meeting, James O'Neill, James M. Tien, Wang Jian-zhou, and Zeng Xue-ming, four members of the advisory board, respectively brought a special "Peiyang Lecture", and engaged in exciting sharing and heated discussions with the present teachers and students.
The International Advisory Board of Management and Economics of Tianjin University is a high-caliber consulting institution, composed of world class business and political leaders, scholars in management and economics, and other social elites. Its tenet is to provide strategic reviews and outreach toward resources for the long-term development of management and economics disciplines at TJU. It also serves as a bridge for the communication between TJU’s College of Management and Economics (CoME) and academic institutions and industries around the world.
