Lecture: BIM adoption in Singapore’s construction industry

Bio:

Dr. Jacky Chung is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Building, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. He started his academic career in the Department of Real Estate of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPolyU) shortly after obtaining PhD degree from the Department of Civil Engineering of The University of Hong Kong in 2010.

Dr. Chung is an experienced researcher in the areas of Collaborative Team Work, Construction Briefing, Stakeholder Engagement, Public-private Partnership (PPP), Value Management (VM), and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Up to 2013, he has been presented six scholarly awards including CIB Guyla Sebestyén Award by the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) in Netherlands, and the Tony Toy Memorial Award by the Hong Kong Institute of Value Management in Hong Kong; and has produced more than 79 research publications in peer-reviewed academic journals and international conferences. Recently he has been appointed as the Guest Editor as well as Assistant Editor of Built Environment Project and Asset Management, which is a young academic journal published by Emerald.

In addition to research, Dr. Chung is also actively engaged in professional practice and has conducted numerous professionally facilitated VM and partnering workshops for various client organizations in Hong Kong since 1999. He was a founding member of building SMART Hong Kong as well as a council member of the Hong Kong Institute of Project Management and Hong Kong Institute of Value Management.

Abstract:

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a three-dimensional (3-D) modelling technology that allows the multi-disciplinary building professionals to explore the building project digitally through an integrated process. It enables better control of project management and execution from planning to design, construction and operations.

Internationally, BIM has been identified as one of the key technologies that will transform the construction industry. In Singapore, BIM has been described as a game changing technology that will improve the construction productivity as well as the level of integration and collaboration across the various disciplines in the construction value chain. To embrace the technology, Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has launched the BIM Roadmap incorporating with Centre for Construction IT, BIM Steering Committee, BIM Manager Forums in 2010 with the aim to achieve 80% of the construction industry use BIM by 2015, which is part of the government’s plan to improve the construction industry’s productivity by up to 25% over the next decade.

In December 2015 and January 2016, a research team from the National University of Singapore surveyed a total of 104 companies in the construction industry, including developers, consultants and contractors to review the development of BIM in Singapore. The survey was designed to collect empirical data to examine the level of BIM adoption in these companies. Preliminary survey findings will be presented at the seminar, in which a dialogue will be created with participants to discuss the way forward in BIM development in Singapore.
