Former President of Mexico, Professor of Yale University and Honorary Professor of Tianjin University, Ernesto Zedillo gave a speech in the theme of “The New Normal - in China and Everywhere: Opportunity for Better Global Governance?” at public lectures of 120thanniversary celebration of Tianjin University, namely, "Ma Yinchu Memorial Lectures in Economics" on the afternoon of Oct. 2nd.

“Ma Yinchu Memorial Lectures in Economics” are designed to be series lectures, organized by the CoME, Tianjin University; Prof. Ernesto Zedillo is the first speaker of these lectures. Hosted by Prof. Zhang Zhongxiang, around 300 alumni, faculty and students of Tianjin University and other universities listened to this lecture, including Dean Prof. Zhang Wei, Party Secretary Li Lianzhong, Associate Dean He Zhen, Associated Dean Li Minqiang, Associated Dean Yang Baochen and Associate Party Secretary Shi Liangxing.

First, Prof. Ernesto Zedillo describes the history of the development of global economy over the past 60 years, he pointed out that since 1950, the global economy dominated by developed countries, and the gap between developing and developed countries is very large. Technology advances and the development of information industry help developing economies made great progress, in which China is the fastest growing among developing countries, the gap with the developed countries is rapidly shrinking. The reason of China has been able to achieve so much success is because of the firm and sustainable implementation of China's economic reform and opening up policy; at the same time, China also provided a strong impetus and a broader market to the development of global economy. For this reason, I am very supportive and optimistic about China's economic development prospects.

Prof. Ernesto Zedillo believes that the degree of interdependence between countries increases higher with the development of economic globalization. When national economic development meets negative issues, resistance to globalization is often generated, while ignoring some of its domestic policy failures, trade protectionism is raised in many countries and cause closure, this will lead to each country become victim who will eventually make the global economy being affected. If countries taken more active coordination, more crises can be avoided, it must be noted that at present many public goods still need to be globalized, such as better financial order and global climate issues and so on, there is an urgent need among countries to make greater coordination, so as to reach agreement.

For China's new normal, Prof. Ernesto Zedillo believes that this is consistent with an adjustment of economic laws. Chinese economy’s slowdown (actual volume is still very large) is not because the root cause of reform, but the reform and development produce new issues into the deeper stage, which has to face and make effective adjustments in the reform. Prof. Ernesto Zedillo particularly pointed out that China should take advantage of the opportunity of the G20 meeting held in China in 2016, to better solve domestic problems. China's reform and development can make the world share dividends; and he hopes China will play a better role in the globalization process. Prof. Ernesto Zedillo’s speech received an enthusiastic response, the two sides interact frequently. Prof. Ernesto Zedillo affirmed the sense of competition, values of cognition, leadership and the importance of reform in personal and national development and expounded his views on related issues. On behalf of CoME, Prof. Zhang Wei, Dean of CoME, presented a souvenir to Prof. Ernesto Zedillo, and sincerely invited him to visit Tianjin University again.
