Trip timing choice by auto or by transit has received the increased interest in recent years. In-vehicle crowding is one of important factors impacting the commuting in rail transit systems, which is significantly distinct from the travel by auto. Existing studies on rail transit commuting problems usually assume commuters have the time-invariant perception of in-vehicle crowding, which depends on the number of in-vehicle (standing) passengers per square meter and in-vehicle travel time, but are not directly dependent on time of day. This assumption might be not well consistent with realistic observations, e.g., commuters departing late may have different, generally more, toleration of in-vehicle crowding relative to those departing early, even if facing with the same situations. Taking rail transit commuters’ time-of-use decisions as the starting point, in this talk, I will first introduce six developed departure-time choice models with commuters’ time-varying perception of in-vehicle crowding, and then report the estimated values of in-vehicle crowding by time of day in the morning rail commute using the combined revealed preference-stated preference (SP+RP) data collected in Beijing. This study’s purpose is to answer: (1) Does the value of in-vehicle crowding truly change by time of day during the morning peak hour? (2) If does, how does it change? Is it increasing or decreasing, and concave or convex? Which specific function form is appropriate to be used to express the time-varying crowding disutility preference?
